Chapter 13 - Embers Over Water

Chapter 13 - Embers Over Water

Jan 14, 2026

In the ancient days of the Water Kingdom, hydromancers were the protectors of balance among the elemental realms, revered for their unique ability to manipulate water in all its forms—flowing, freezing, and even summoning storms. Their mastery was unmatched, and the empire flourished under their guidance.

The greatest among them was the emperor of hydromancers, a figure who could bend water to his will, creating vast glaciers or calming raging seas with a mere thought. Yet, as generations passed, the lineage of powerful hydromancers began to fade. The emperor's descendants lost the innate frost power that had once characterized their bloodline, leaving only a handful of hydromancers, each weaker than the last.

Now, the descendants of the pyromancers flourished, their vibrant, fiery abilities overshadowing the dwindling hydromancer lineage thus, the empire of pyromancer's was born.

The pyromancers conquered more territory, their growing power forcing the hydromancers to submit to their realm, the new empire.

The only reason the Water Kingdom and the Fire Empire once maintained a fragile peace was due to the friendship between King Thalor's Queen and the late Fire Empress. It was this bond that had led to the unannounced engagement between Marina and the crown prince, a union meant to solidify their alliance.

But with the revelation of Marina's powers, a flicker of hope ignited within him—a chance to revive the ancient legacy of the hydromancers. Her rare ability to freeze water marked her as a beacon of potential.

"If she can fully harness her gifts..." King Thalor mused, feeling a swell of pride alongside an undercurrent of anxiety. Perhaps she could restore their family's honor and challenge the growing supremacy of the pyromancers, reigniting the glory of their country.

As word of her extraordinary feats spread, Thalor's heart raced with a mix of hope and dread. He knew that his daughter's path could reshape their future, yet it also exposed her to unprecedented dangers. "Marina," he whispered, the weight of her destiny pressing heavily upon him as he stared into the vastness of the sea beyond the palace walls.

The air crackled with tension as the knights of the Water Kingdom marched alongside their Queen, shimmering armor reflecting the embers of the Fire Empire. Pyromancer citizens halted in their tracks, eyes filled with a mix of apprehension and intrigue as the imposing castle, a riot of blazing reds and oranges, rose before them. As they approached, the fire knights shifted strongly, their hands hovering near weapons, but Prince Axion stepped forward, his regal demeanor a stark contrast to the growing unease.

"I greet you, Your Majesty, Queen Selene of the Water Kingdom, and you as well, Crown Prince Alon," he called, his voice resonating through the throng. "Welcome to the Fire Empire. We expected your visit."

"Thank you, Imperial Prince Axion," Selene replied, her tone steady.

Axion inclined his head slightly. "If you'll permit me, I will escort you to the drawing room. The Emperor awaits."

Selene exchanged a glance with Alon, then nodded. "Lead the way."

As they enter the castle gates, the vibrant hues of the building enveloped them, a stark reminder of the power and passion that defined the Fire Empire. The fire knights parted, allowing the Queen and her son to pass, their eyes still lingering, a mixture of curiosity and caution.

As the grand doors of the castle swung shut behind them, the hydromancer knights stood sentinel outside, their armor glinting in the fiery glow of the Pyromancer capital. The air was thick with heat and anticipation, a stark contrast to the cool waters they hailed from.

Selene took a moment to glance back at the imposing structure before turning to Axion, "I must apologize for arriving with plenty of knights," she said, her voice low. "My husband, the King of the Hydromancers, is... particularly overprotective. He intended only to safeguard us on our journey since he could not accompany us himself."

Axion raised an eyebrow, the corners of his mouth hinting at a smile. "It's understandable, Your Majesty. A king's duty is to protect his family."

Selene smiled, "He treasures our family above all else. It is a bond we hold dear, and I appreciate your patience with our show of force."

"Your knights are a testament to your love and loyalty," Axion replied, his tone warm.

Outside, the hydromancer knights stood in disciplined silence, their expressions revealing a mixture of pride and anxiety. The heat from the castle radiated outward, creating a shimmering haze, yet their focus remained unbroken.

Inside the castle, the atmosphere shifted as they arrived at the drawing room. The Emperor sat at the head of an intricately carved table, an imposing figure radiating authority. His presence filled the space, commanding respect.

"We greet Your Imperial Majesty, the Emperor of the great pyromancers." the Queen and the Prince said while bowing their heads slightly.

"Welcome, Queen Selene of the Water Kingdom, and you as well, Crown Prince Alon." His voice resonated with authority, filling the room as he extended a formal greeting.

"Thank you, Your Excellency," Selene replied, her tone steady and respectful. "We appreciate your hospitality during this urgent time." The weight of the moment hung between them, each aware of the delicate matters that had brought them together.

"Please, take your seats," the Emperor continued, gesturing toward the richly upholstered chairs around the table. "I am well aware of the gravity of your visit, and I assure you that your concerns shall be treated with the utmost seriousness."

Queen Selene bowed her head slightly, her voice steady yet laced with urgency. "Thank you for your understanding, but I must still apologize for our sudden visit. We couldn't send word—my daughter's condition weighs heavily upon me." The gravity of her words filled the air, a palpable tension reflecting the turmoil she felt within.

The Emperor nodded, a flicker of recognition crossing his face. Memories of his late empress, who had cherished a close friendship with Selene, softened his demeanor. "You are always welcome here," he replied, his voice warm with sincerity and Selene thanked him politely.

"Your Excellency, we have come to discuss my sister Marina. Her well-being is of paramount importance to us." Prince Alon started, his voice steady.

Queen Selene drew a steadying breath, feeling the gravity of the moment settle around her. This was not just a diplomatic encounter; it was a mother's desperate plea. "We've heard that she awakened the Imperial Highness Avaxion," she said, a flicker of worry igniting in her eyes. "But now, she too has succumbed to slumber."

The Emperor's expression softened, his heart aching for the young royals caught in this turmoil. "You have our support," he said gently. "It is only right that we send her home once she recovers."

Selene leaned in, determination etched across her features. "I must insist that we take Marina home with us, even if she hasn't fully awakened yet."

The Emperor's brow furrowed, concern etching itself across his features. "But your daughter needs time to heal, and our healers can assist her," he said, his voice steady but tinged with worry. "I also wish to speak with her to express my gratitude. I cannot send her home without ensuring she is well after treating my son." His words lingered in the air, a delicate balance of duty and compassion evident in his tone.

The Queen's voice was steady, unwavering. "I appreciate your kindness, Your Excellency," she began, her tone imbued with dignity.

"But she is my daughter. I fear that without her home, she may not find the strength to awaken at all. I can't bear the thought of Marina being away from her home and family any longer than necessary." She continued, her voice soft but firm. "She has given so much of herself to awaken the imperial crown prince; now, she needs the comfort of our waters to heal. The bond of our kingdom is powerful and she will respond better surrounded by her family and the waters of our homeland."

At her side, Alon spoke up, his youthful face a mask of concern. "My apologies, Your Excellency. But we cannot stay here another day; our father is anxiously waiting for my sister's return."

The Emperor's gaze remained fixed upon the two royals, sharp and unflinching. He took in the resolve radiating from them, like the heat from a roaring fire, fierce and unwavering. There was no trace of doubt in their words. No sign of weakness. He could see the quiet desperation beneath their regal calm. His silence stretched between them, heavy and thick, as he considered their plea.

"Very well," he said, his voice steady and authoritative. "We shall prepare her for the journey. I will have my servants ready a carriage without delay." His eyes held theirs with unyielding resolve, the command in his voice unmistakable. "You have my word."

"However," he continued, his voice softening just slightly, "I would like to speak with her and express my gratitude once she has recovered."

He straightened, his composure resolute, yet his tone softened. "I recognize the bond between your family, and I respect all of your wishes for her well-being. However, she must return to visit us when she comes of age." The weight of his promise hung in the air, a delicate acknowledgment of their shared hopes and the responsibilities that lay ahead.

The Queen's heart raced beneath her poised exterior, a whirlwind of anxiety threatening to unravel her calm facade. She could not bear the thought of Marina returning, yet she understood the emperor's grip on the situation. If she defied his demands, he would not easily relinquish Marina, tightening his hold instead. The tension hung heavy in the air, each heartbeat a reminder of the precarious balance she must navigate.

"I am grateful for everything you have done, and I too wish for you to see her well," she replied, her voice steady. The Emperor nodded, taking her words as a confirmation.

"However, Your Excellency," she continued, a note of hesitation creeping into her tone, "with their engagement already dissolved, I must respectfully decline any further connection between my daughter and the imperial crown prince." The weight of her statement hung in the air, a protective mother's resolve echoing in her words.

"Very well," the Emperor replied, his expression thoughtful. "As a gesture of gratitude for awakening my son, I shall ensure she is not entangled with him."

A wave of relief washed over Selene. "Thank you, Your Imperial Majesty," she said, her voice imbued with sincere appreciation. The weight on her heart began to lift, allowing a glimmer of hope to shine through the shadows of her worries.

Born with a gift so potent it could incinerate the world, the crown prince struggled to control the fiery power coursing through him. His young body, too fragile to withstand the force, often failed him, causing his mana to erupt in violent bursts, harming everything around him.

Emotionless and hollow, he moved through life like a ghost, a living corpse. For he knew that the moment he felt even the smallest flicker of emotion -joy, anger, or sorrow-his power will spiraled out of control, exploding in deadly flames.

He had learned this harsh truth as a child, the day his mother and unborn sister died. Overwhelmed by happiness at the sight of his family together, he lost control. His mother died in the resulting blaze, and from that moment on, he believed love was beyond him, that he was unworthy of any feeling. He vowed never to love and never to feel anything. Love, he believed, was a curse, a death sentence for those he held dear.

But his bleak, colorless world began to shift when a mysterious hand reached out and touched his fiery heart, soothing the raging flames. No one else had ever possessed the power to calm the inferno within him-but her. The fire allowed her near, drawing her in, and with her presence, he felt a dangerous new longing. A desire to claim the power that soothed his soul, to make her his own.
