I wonder if their piercings represents ranks. When the legionnaire said Al does not deserves them and pulls them away forcefully, does that mean he doesn't deserve command a legion because of him being a traitor? So much questions...In here, we see Al (assuming as Stryder) has only three and in the present he has 4 (the long one)
