Sanjo Bridge, in Kyoto, marks the end of the Tokaido and Nakasendo roads, from Tokyo to Kyoto. The river it crosses is a famous place to see the sakura bloom in spring. Somewhat lesser known is the violent history of the bridge, with riverside executions and samurai uprisings telling a story of a different era.
