Well! Here we are, the beginning of Chapter One. We've done the Zen; now it's time for the Romance and the History!
And so the "secret" is revealed: my main characters (besides the brick, of course) are Madame Curie and her husband Pierre, the groundbreaking scientists who discovered radioactivity. I hope you will enjoy my characterization and retelling of their story.
HISTORICAL NOTE #1: Pierre's dialogue from page 3 is adapted from a love letter he wrote to Marie, after they had met in Paris and she had moved back to Poland. He had already tried unsuccessfully to win her hand in marriage and was now proposing that they be "friends," be "near each other," and focus on their dreams of science! That is what he is primarily referring to when he says "our dreams."
HISTORICAL NOTE #2: As depicted on page 4, the first gift Pierre ever gave to Marie was a copy of the scientific paper he had written. I don't know if her reaction was quite as enthusiastic as I show it here -- hee hee -- but I thought it was a good illustration of their profound love of science.
