This week's episode marks the biggest departure so far from the Curies' actual history and introduces story elements which will play a larger role in Chapter II: Opening Doors (starting about ep. 26). CONTEST: which work of literature does this week's title come from AND what is the significance of the 33 ring? PRIZE: graphic novel of my previous comic! Just comment your answers below.
HISTORIC NOTE: As mentioned, a big departure from reality with this episode. In actuality, the Curies rented a place in France and were extremely poor. They used an old shed and eventually an abandoned mortuary for their laboratory, working under pitiful conditions. However, I really wanted a rural setting for my story AND for the brick's sake, it was important that a house be built. Thus, I concocted a way for Pierre to have made some odd and unsavory connections to provide his finances.
As I began researching the Curies' life and realized that their harsh poverty was a HUGE part of their story (Other scientists were amazed that they were able to do such great work in such horrible laboratory conditions!), I felt kinda bad that I had given them a nice house in the country, had blessed them with sudden fortune. But... I had already invented the characters that will provide conflict in Chapter II, so it actually worked out well to give them this extra connection to Pierre.
