“I don’t believe this, why would the Goddess suddenly go on a rampage? It just doesn’t make sense!” Finn exclaimed. The news continued, “Legionnaires in the town report that the situation is under control and is already planning damage control as we speak. As for the Goddess’s Glaive it is under tight security and is being planned to be stowed away until further notice. Further details on the matter is currently classified at the moment.” The news then continued on to other stories as if the previous story wasn’t important or that it never even happened. Nova thought about all this for a few moments, while Finn on the other hand felt awkward and unsure on what to do to spur a conversation.
Nova finally had enough of the waiting around and feeling useless so she gathered her things and made for the hatch. Finn looked at her in question and got up after her, “Where are you going?”
“It’s none of your business. Thank you for the shelter, but I must get going now.” She went up the hatch without delaying another second.
Nova’s eyes were strained the moment she stepped outside. The sunlight was much brighter than in the room. Nova allowed her eyes to adjust and then she neared the roof edge to check if the coast was clear. Behind her the hatch opened and Finn came out. Nova was slightly annoyed by him now and so asked, “Why are you following me?”
Finn let out a sigh, “Well you’re not very talkative, a bit rude at that, and now you won’t let me tag along. I did kind of help you escape an angry mob not too long ago and now you want to go back out there after only some ten minutes? I think it best if I followed you in case you need some help getting around town, and besides, you do kind of owe me for letting you hide at my place, so I think it’s only fair.”
Nova was annoyed by his persistence in following and how much he talks, but most of all she was annoyed by the fact that she really didn’t have anything to say against him following her. She let out a sigh, “Fine, just don’t slow me down… and don’t get in my way!”
He gave her the okay sign, “Roger that, you won’t even know I’m there! So… where are we off too exactly? Skipping town, nice restaurant, shopping? Just tell me and I’ll take you to the best places in town!”
Nova thought for a moment, she hadn’t really thought everything out in detail. She had her mind set on taking back Pyrium’s Glaive, but not much detail in how she’ll do it. Nova could skip town... she shook her head and pushed the thought out of the way. She remembered Pyrium’s words and thought to herself, “I have been running for as long as I can remember… how much longer can I keep this up? I need to do something… I’ve come this far, this is the least I can do!”
Nova looked to Finn, “I want to find Pyrium’s Glaive!”
Finn looked confused at first then his eyes went wide, “You’re serious aren’t you? So that angry mob… you were…”
Nova continued to eye him down, “You still sure you want to follow me?”
Finn was silent on the matter still looking at Nova in question and concern, but finally he answered back, “I said I could take you to the best places in town didn’t I? Where ever it is you need to be then I’m the guy… but are you sure you don’t want to find a nice restaurant instead?”
Nova just walked away to begin her search and Finn quickly caught up to her. Nova scanned the streets below to see where they could have taken the Glaive. They returned to the areas where there had been shooting and damage, then to the place where the Goddess was slain. When they arrived they could see a lot of legionnaires in the streets below blocking the areas off to public and guarding the area while a team of investigators swept the scene, probably looking for clues to tell who was with the Goddess before she escaped. Nova and Finn laid low and took cover behind the roof railings. Nova continued looking at the scenes to see anything that may lead them to where the Goddess’s weapon is being held. “Whoa… the Goddess did all of this?”
Nova got up and walked away, bitterly saying, “Half of it.”
“I just can’t wrap my head around this. Why would the Goddess start all of this?”
Nova snapped, “She didn’t, it was all them, the Legion started all of this!” The soldiers must have heard her because some of them looked around for the source of Nova’s voice. Finn saw this down below and motioned to leave, “It’s not safe here anymore.”
They began to leave and under her breath Nova said, “When is it ever?”
They moved from roof top to roof top for a little bit until Nova said, “You have any idea where they would keep her weapon at? All of this searching is just wasting time!”
“Sorry I really wish I can be of help… but I think I know a better place to start our search follow me!”
Nova followed Finn as they continued jumping across the roofs of buildings almost three stories high. Nova began having to keep up, but it seemed that Finn was very enthusiastic in going to where ever it is they seem to be going. After some time crossing buildings, they seemed to reach some buildings with higher elevation until they saw a clock tower, mounted on the side of a big building. “If there is one thing Town Hall is good for, it’s getting the lay of the land.”
They began their approach, and crossed a monument to get to the roof of Town Hall. When they neared the clock tower Finn motioned to stay back. In a distance they could see a security camera. Finn sneaked up on it from below and reach around the back of the camera and shut it off. “How did you do that?” Nova asked. Finn shrugged, “I come up here plenty of times, and this is Kykry, when does anything ever happen in Kykry? Well besides today that is.” Upon looking at the door Nova saw they would need a key to get through the door which seemed to be made entirely of strong metal, “Don’t worry,” Finn said, “I got this.” He was at the lock picking it and after a moment they were in. “Sorry it took a bit, it’s always the third pin that gives me problems.”
They stepped inside and saw that there were stairs leading up to the top of the tower. As they ascended Nova noticed that it was all automated by gears like the old ways. She commented on this, “Gears, this town likes to keep it lock tech huh?”
“Yeah, I always questioned it too. Why not go holographic like the other cities? But I guess what isn’t broken don’t try to fix it. I kind of dig it anyways.”
They reached the top of the tower and opened a panel leading out. Upon opening they were greeted with a bird’s eye view of the town and a ledge to walk out on. They walked on the ledge and wasted no time looking around the area. They didn’t know exactly what they were looking for, just anything that looked like they would keep the Glaive of a Divine God. They looked around for a while and didn’t see anything until they spotted, back at the Town Square, legionnaires and lights set up in the area. “That must be where the Glaive is being kept.” Nova said, “Let’s go!” Before she could start for the stairs Finn interrupted, “Wait, wait! I have a faster, more fun way to get down!” He then pulled from a pouch from the side of his pants a black and silver looking device. He flicked it forward and then twirled it back and pulled at a string until it showed its true form. An intricate looking compound bow. He then pulled out an arrow from his quiver bag on his back, which Nova didn’t even notice until now. Finn loaded the arrow and locked the arrow on the string somehow. He fired the arrow at the bottom of the tower and the arrow flew, but also a rope extended from the arrow tip. The arrow hit the ground and implanted, Finn took the arrow end and folded it in a way where it divides into three pieces, then placed it on the edge. He pushed down a switch on the end and a metal slide extended up, Finn stepped down on the slide firmly and he heard a metallic chomp from the end. Finn stepped off and looked at Nova, “After you.”
Nova looked at the rope and approached with caution. At first she questioned the safety of the rope and then decided that she better get it over with. She grabbed a piece of cloth from her satchel and used it as she began to slide down the rope. Faster she accelerated down the slope until she landed down the bottom. “That wasn’t so bad.” She said to herself. She looked up and saw Finn jump off the ledge then grab the rope with his bow. Quickly enough he had made it to the bottom. “See, the fun way!”
He then picked up the arrow head, flicked a lever and tugged at the rope. Surely enough the arrow end came back to him and reformed as if it were new. They then went off towards the Town Square where it all began that morning. They hurried, but also were careful with the patrols of legionnaires roaming the town. When they arrived near the outskirts of Town Square they saw that it was blocked off by metal walls and guards weren’t allowing any entry through the Square. Nova looked at the rooftops and saw that there were scouts and snipers scattered throughout the area. They decided to back off and head somewhere else before any of the soldiers took suspicion of them standing around. They headed to an alley a few buildings away from the Square. “Damn it!” Nova cursed, “How am I going to get the Glaive back now?”
Finn chimed in, “So are you ever going to tell me exactly how and why you’re involved in all of this, or am I going to have to barrage you with questions?”
“Why do you care? I don’t even know you.”
“Well true, but you still kind of owe me this much. What’s going on here, why is it that suddenly a whole new war started?”
“You watched the news, you heard it yourself.”
Finn sat down on a nearby box, “So you expect me to believe that Pyrium, the Goddess of Fire and Honor, just up and thought that humans should be destroyed? Come on do you think I’m that stupid or do you just happen to hate people?”
Nova held her breath in frustration and then let out a sigh, “Fine, you want the truth? Well stop me when this starts to make no sense. Yesterday I woke up in Briedon like I have been as usual, then what do you know? The great Legion shows up with a parade in honor of the final war! It would have been fun, except until they started shooting at innocent people, me included. Then after all of that they torch the town and blame it on Pyrium, little did she know that this was all a trap to lure her out. After that she and I barely escaped together and decided to save the only town we can save which is Kykry when the morning came. So off we go and here we are now, I’m here trying to get back her Glaive for her and the Goddess on the other hand is dead because of the people getting in the way and actually believing that the Goddess would be behind the burnings. Make sense to you? Because you didn’t stop me!”
Finn looked at her blankly processing all that she had just told him. When he finally comprehended it he snapped out of his trance and asked, “But why would the Legion even start in the first place? And kill innocent people just for it… all for what, have they gone mad?”
Nova shook her head, “It’s not hard to imagine.” Nova paused for a second causing Finn to question if something was wrong, “Is it really that long ago when the Oracle was last killed?” Nova said, “Even before that how long has it been since the Gods have struck down on man for killing and polluting this world? All I can say is, with population increasing and the Legion free to build and expand, this rising tension was a long time coming… do you believe me, or do I have to come up with a different story?”
Finn looked at her and with a confident voice he said, “I believe you.”
“Wow that was easy.” Nova said under her breath, “Why though? You just met me, I can be a criminal for all you know and you trust me this easily? You must be naïve, stupid, or both.”
He scratched his head, “Well I wouldn’t say that! Just say it’s… my intuition speaking. Also the news is so boring, I swear half of the time I catch myself sleeping or passing time watching it! I know this may sound crazy, but I think the anchorman is a robot, always precise with his words… too precise…”
Nova listening to him go off on a tangent made her quietly chuckle. Finn caught it and asked, “Was that a laugh?” as he smiles and gets excited, “Am I finally breaking the ice?”
Nova waved her hand dismissing the thought, “You just talk a lot!”
“Aww, well it was worth a try.” He snapped his fingers, “You know I think there actually might be a way inside those walls… but I don’t think you’ll much like what I have to say.”
Nova was eager to hear it and had her undivided attention on him, “If you got something then speak up! I need to get that Glaive back!”
“Well… it involves going into the sewers. Hurray…!”
Nova’s enthusiasm sank when she heard this, “Can’t say I’m a fan of sewers… but if that’s what it takes then what are we waiting for?”
