Kyle's thinking, "Surely he didn't mean "cute" like CUTE right and oh dang unrelated I am in so much trouble."
EDIT:
Originally published 10/17/17; updated on 5/21/23
The redraw includes cleaner lines and backgrounds. One panel that was previously solely text was made into an illustrated panel. In order to make room for another illustration, two panels were combined. The sentiment of dialogue remains the same from its original publication, but some lines were revised. Most of these alterations were inconsequential.
Some intentional changes, though, include:
1. Instead of "All right, don't be cute..." (original), the redraw has Ryan give a little laugh "Heh. Don't be cute..." so it feels a little more flirtatious and he comes off a little more charmed than in the original
2. Originally, Kyle said, "Ah shish mah parensh..." but that has been changed to "Ohmahgah mah parensh..." to limit the amount of cursing Kyle does at this stage of the story
3. There was a text panel that said, "I should explain: my parents are ultra-conservative evangelicals who are impossibly strict and perpetually displeased with me. They would not approve of anything about this evening." This was condensed in the redraw to fit into an illustrated panel.
Additionally, in the original drawing the list of things Kyle's parents may do has changed from:
"Actually, I guess they could:
1. Lock me in my room for the forseeable future
2. Quit acknowledging me during meals
3. Take my door off of its hinges
4. Lock up all of my belongings"
This has been changed to,
"Though, I suppose, in the past they have:
1. Locked me in my room for the weekend
2. Quit acknowledging me entirely
3. Took my door off its hinges
4. Thrown out many of my belongings..."
This change is to show that he isn't just worried, his experiences give him reason to be.
Kyle Williams always tried to do what his parents expected of him. He studied, he worked, he went to church. But then, during his senior year of high school, he realized that he was in love with one of his friends. That in and of itself would defy his parents' rules and expectations. Here's what happened next...
