In feudal Japan, three friends roam from village to village, gambling or working for money as the opportunities arise. They have no homes, no family, and no loyalty but to each other. Most of the time, it is a simple matter for the friends to pick up and leave for another village, but occasionally, the call of a village in trouble becomes too strong to ignore.
