A young woman cursed to wear the faces of the dead. A golden boy with a woman's name, who hasn't answered to it in twenty years. A Seer who said nothing at the hanging, and has twenty years of silence to answer for.
Hjordis Helmbane wanted two things: a child, and her village's grudging respect. What she got was a demon in her chest, a face that isn't hers, and a travelling companion who composes ditties:
"Here I am, don't be nervous. Mr Beardaughter, to your service."
They hanged Tryggve Beardaughter at seventeen, for a queen's murder he never committed. Twenty years on, he's somehow still alive, walking to Cora for something smaller than vengeance and heavier than forgiveness: an answer, from the boy he loved who stood in the crowd and studied his toes.
Hjordis is walking to Cora because the same man might know how to get a demon out of her. Neither of them would call it travelling together, exactly.

The prophecies say the earth will crack in his wake, that the dead will not stay buried where he bleeds. The Magistracy has spent twenty years hoping he was a rumour.
The fabled Destroyer draws near. Mostly, he'd like someone to talk to. She'd like him to stop.

Hard to love. Always too much. Deserving of it all the same.
