Sammy, or just Sam for short is bullied so badly at his prep school which he got in thanks to a music scholarship that he is moved to the sister school to avoid a lawsuit after a severe beating from a rich bully. While still fearing his bully, who has friends at the other school will target and look for him Sam starts wearing his sister's clothes and going as Samantha so the bullies can't find him. As his bully is looking for a guy, not a girl.
As Sam was adopted by two dads the school just assumes he is gender fluid and don't correct people when he's labeled a girl. The school nurse knows as his medical record gave it away, but keeps his secret out of respect.
Although Sam originally only dressed as a girl to hid in plain sight at school he starts to like, and feel more comfortable. Causing Sam to question a lot about himself.
Sam was adopted as one of his dads has a family history of Huntington's disease, and both hid dads wanted to avoid him and his sister getting it.
Huntington's disease does not skip generations. however Each child of a parent with Huntington's has a 50% chance of inheriting the defective gene. If a child does not inherit the gene, he or she cannot pass it on. But if the child does inherit the gene, he or she can pass it on and will develop the disease.
Dad one did not inherit it, but still felt adoption was a better idea than a surrogate. Much to the annoyances of Sam’s toxic aunt who makes it clear Sam’s not blood to her. But she does like his sister for some reason.
Sam has never been bother before about being adopted until his mean spirited cousin, the son of his toxic aunt points out his birth family might have any number of diseases which was why he was given up for adoption. This cause Sam to get paranoid over his genetic history and want to learn more about his past.
