During the height of Ottoman expansion, Eastern European families lived in fear of the devşirme, the “blood tax”, that tore sons from their homes to be raised as soldiers of the empire. When Doina’s brother is taken, she sets out across a fractured land to bring him home. Along the way, she meets a stoic nomad, a cunning merchant, and a noblewoman torn by loyalty. She'll face betrayal, survival, and the quiet presence of God in places she least expects.
