Laere Crest is an itinerant teacher who has traveled through the many villages and encampments that make up his home region of Glain's Frostcrag. After news from a courier that his mother was on the verge of death, Laere abandoned his travels and returned home.

Upon arriving, however, Laere discovers the funeral pyre of his mother already being lit. Yet even as her pyre burns to ash, the circumstances surrounding her death become increasingly problematic. As Laere is pushed to investigate his home village and the people therein for himself, will he find out who--or what--was responsible for his mother's death?
