“I am going to inventory the supplies that came in yesterday if that is all you needed, Dr. Livingston.” The man in the lab coat said while glancing at the activity going on through the window. He knew the experiment was due to run again and wanted out of there before it started. He stood waiting for a reply holding his clip board in his left hand tapping it impatiently against his leg.
There were fifteen scientists from different countries participating in an experiment; each with their own motivations and theories. They had been here, isolated in a remote region of China for over six months now. Supplies had to be shipped in and that could only be done once a month. Everyone was on edge, they had to show results to their respective governments and to top it off some information had been leaked. Some even thought it was Dr. Sarah Livingston who had been the one responsible for it. This time it was Sarah who had the lead, the very one who was under suspicion and the only one to come close to completing their objectives here.
Sarah looked over the figures she had done and checked all the monitors before answering the faceless tech beside her. To her none of them mattered, as long as she produced results, as long as she did what she came here to do. She would screw them all over if she needed to. “That’s fine,” she looked down at his name tag before continuing. “Bob. You go do that. You will just be in the way here and I need to work. Now, go make use of yourself.” She shooed him from in front of the control panel where he was standing and began checking the read-outs and monitors there before proceeding.
Bob turned his back on Dr. Livingston closing the door behind him with the finality of a tomb. He could hear the door’s internal security locks slide home and thought to himself how he hoped that she would die in there, the frigid bitch. He started his long walk past the many heavy steel security doors that would slam shut in case of emergency or a breach of containment heading towards his destination. He quickened his pace, eager to get away from this part of the facility and that crazy woman he despised.
Back in the lab Sarah now satisfied with the read-outs, prepares to start this next series of experiments. She hits the record on the microphone and turns on the speaker for inside the lab so the techs will be able to hear her instructions. “Date Monday eleventh November twenty-twenty, time thirteen hundred hours. Experiment S-6120B. Okay begin.”
Bob is knocked down on his face as something seems to jolt the whole facility. He lies on the ground for a moment trying to get his bearings struggling with the ringing in his ears. He looks up in horror as one of the massive steel security doors slams shut in front of him cutting one of the interns in half. The lights flicker off then switch to back up as the lab gets rocked by another explosion, this one more violent than the last. His hearing comes back in time to hear the high pitch wail of the alarm signaling a breach of some kind and a multitude of screams. He rises to his feet and was going to head back towards the lab. Before Bob is able to turn his body around something from the shadows slices his head from his body. The last sight Bob sees before his vision goes dark is that of his now headless body dropping to the ground and a beast made of flame coming from the shadows.
