Prologue

There's a blaze beneath my feet, yet I remain untouched; the walls ooze with molten rock, but I feel no heat—just a sense of normalcy as if I'm suspended in air. I reach out to make contact, and the lava cascades down my arm like a waterfall, yet it doesn't scorch me. Instead, it seeps into my skin, causing it to radiate with a glow. I emerge from the lava flow into a cave, drawn towards a light in the distance. As I step into the brightness, my eyes adjust, revealing a sight unlike anything I've ever encountered. My skin's glow fades, leaving me with a sensation of power, almost weightless. Yet, I can feel the heft of my strength, as if it has always been a part of me. I extend my hand, envisioning my desire, and utter the word, "Mirror." A shimmering substance flows from my palm, coalescing into a sphere that begins to transform. It morphs into a tall, rectangular full-length mirror. I approach it, eager to see the reflection of my changed self. I catch my breath in astonishment as I peer into the mirror; looking back at me are my own eyes, undeniably my own. Yet, they have transformed—where white once was, now a vivid red, and my blue irises are adorned with luminous blue rings. Blinking, I lean in closer, filled with wonder at my reflection. I am no longer human, that much is certain.

Introduction

Good evening, and welcome back to National Channel 5 News. In today's report, we cover a tragic incident that occurred yesterday in a town named Salida, Colorado. An 18-wheeler driver fell asleep at the wheel, resulting in a collision with a couple's vehicle. They were immediately transported to the Heart of the Rockies trauma facility but unfortunately succumbed during surgery. The driver also lost his life in the accident, leaving behind the couple's daughter as the last surviving member of her family. From the station and myself, reporter Jessica, we extend our heartfelt condolences and are deeply sorry for your loss. Coming up next on National Channel 5 News....

I gasp in surprise as I gaze into the mirror, staring back at me are my own Red Eyes, unmistakably mine.
