Aurora's Point of View
5 years earlier
I woke up late at night, suddenly forgetting the dream I had been previously hopping in joy to. The loud crashing just downstairs had led me to the conclusion that someone must’ve broken in. Scared for my life, I jumped out of my bed, stumbling across the room and to my closet. I stopped running when I hear the distinct sound of voices; they were shouting.
Sighing in dismay, I let go of my worries and began fiddling with my pajama shirt in nervousness. Is my father home already?
“What are you doing here? Get out!” My mother cried out in rage.
I slowly unlock my door and gently walked outside. As I reached the stairway, a hand reached up towards me and grabbed my arm. I turn around to see Ramsey, our household maid. “My lady, you shouldn’t be outside your bedroom this late at night.”
Ignoring her concerned look, I whispered towards her “Is my father here again?”
She stood there in silence, not looking into my eyes. I just knew that the answer to my question justifies it all.
“No, no! I will not allow you to go up there! I will not allow my daughter to be associated with you, you monster! You put our family in this…this vulnerability! Because of you, I can’t let my daughter have a normal life! How could you do this to us?”
Ah yes, they were arguing about it again. Ever since my father came home covered in…blood, my mother forbid me to see him again.
I once saw him covered in red with my own eyes and it scared me to death. My mother locked me up in my room almost everyday, just for my ‘safety’.
It started five months ago, on my eighteenth birthday. My father came home after the party ended, that’s where I saw him drenched in blood. I screamed for help, especially for my mother. But when she came in, she yelled at the guards to take me to my room.
Ever since then, I never saw my father and my friends again. Being locked up in my house never helped my situation, because I realized that being ‘safe’ was being ‘locked up’ in my case. So as months passed by, I came to a conclusion that I need to find my freedom, even for just a little bit.
My parents’ endless bicker downstairs snapped me out of my thoughts, their voices went louder and louder every time the other speaks. It sickened me, and I can’t handle it anymore.
For two months my father has been trying to get a hold of me, breaking in late at night or calling every 24 hours, it annoyed me that my mother won’t even let me talk with him at all. I, at least, need to hear his side of the story.
I know that seeing your father come home in blood isn’t an everyday occurrence, but what if he was in an accident? What if he was covered in blood because he was helping someone who was bleeding? On top of that, I know my father. My parents’ marriage lasted for 10 years, why is this happening now? To be honest, I don’t even know why my mother won’t let me speak with him. Did he do something wrong?
Ramsey pulled me away from the stairs gently, whispering things like not going out of my room late at night and not listening to my parents’ fight.
I stopped her from dragging me away, looking back at the stairs. “Ramsey, I need to stop this once and for all. It’s irritating me! I can’t sleep at night when it’s already in my consciousness that my father is only concerned for me too. I can’t let my mother lock me up everyday just for this.”
I walked away from her, ignoring her pleads as I went downstairs.
In front of me is my father wearing his business attire, he looked pale and sick; I was worried he’d collapse in any second now. My mother is in her pajamas; her hair was tied up in a bun and her face held so much fury.
A few of our guards stood around each corner, not interfering the married couple, and then I stepped forward. “Mother, that’s enough please!”
My mother turned around with wide eyes, “Aurora! Get back to your room, now! You don’t have any business here!”
“Mother—”
“Aurora,” I hear my father whisper in despair, “my little butterfly, please help you old man here.”
I crossed my arms, “Mother, I can’t believe you’re being to childish right now. I may not know the reason why you’re angry with father, but leaving me out of this will not help. If my father wants to talk to me, then he’ll talk to me. As an adult now, I have the right to choose. Stop being to unreasonable!”
My mother huffed at me, “You young lady are in big trouble! You don’t talk to your mother like that!”
“Really? Then how about you start acting like one!” I exclaimed in frustration, raising my hands in gesture.
“You little—”
“Anna! You don’t talk to your daughter like that!”
My mother looked back at my father, then towards me, “You know what? I don’t care anymore; I don’t even know why I let you stay in this house in the first place! You’re just like your father, stubborn, rude, and disrespectful! After you talk with this scumbag, get your things and leave!”
My heart broke, but I of all people should know I deserve that. I sigh as I stared at her retreating form.
“Sweetie, I’ve been wanting to speak with you; I need to tell you something.”
I nodded blankly, “What is it?”
“I don’t have much time Rory, I did something horrible, and I afraid that I will no longer be here to protect you soon.”
My heart dropped, “W…what are you talking about?”
“I’m a Werecat, who is hired to kill people in favor of others. I kill people, and because of that, I get paid with an amount of price.”
I couldn’t believe I was hearing this, my father…a werecat? “Father, what nonsense are you talking about?” I said nervously.
“We don’t have much time Rory, if your mother had let me speak with you, then everything would’ve been done accordingly. But now you’re my only chance, please listen to me carefully. Five months ago, I murdered a man that holds so much power, an alpha wolf. That man is dead because of me, and his pack will come after you. I tried my best to explain to them my situation, but they didn’t give me any chance. So in the end we made an agreement, as long as I find the man who ordered me to kill their leader, I can no longer be in their target list. But, but,” he paused as he stared at my scared expression, “the man who gave me the orders has disappeared and now…now I can’t…” he choked.
“I’m so sorry baby girl, I tried my best to protect you, but I failed you. My little butterfly,” he whispered.
And then there came my tears, “Father…please tell that isn’t true, please…please tell me you didn’t kill anyone, and that you are an innocent man…I can’t…believe…please…” I started choking on my words; my emotions couldn’t handle everything he had said.
Is my father a murderer?
“Listen Aurora, your mother will no longer listen to the both of us. So you must promise me that if something happens, don’t die for me. Okay? Okay my little butterfly?” He croaked out, holding my shoulders and squeezing them.
“I love you so much.” He leaned in and kissed my forehead, hugging me tightly.
“Sir,” a gruff voice called out from the shadows, “we need to move.”
My father pulled away and held me hands, “I have to go and find my client, I need him so I can protect you. As soon as I leave that door, you pack your bags and leave, all right? Percy,” he motioned to someone, who suddenly came out of the shadows and handed me a box, “will take good care of you.”
I looked down at the box in curiosity, until I opened it and was surprised to see a cat with a rare breed. “These creatures have skills that will soon grow in a span of months, keep him for your safety.”
Looking up at my father, I whispered “But what about you?”
He smiled sadly at me, “I will come back for you, I promise.”
As he began to walk away into the shadows, I was left on my own. And for the first time in my life, I didn’t know what to do.
What should I do?
