When Pink Diamond turned into a Rose Quartz, she changed the physical properties of her gem as well as what powers she had. But gemstones, especially Diamonds, have incredible memory. Later when she gave up her form to create human life, her gem manifested both personalities in two separate gems. From those gems came Steven and Matthew, one with the protective powers of a Rose Quartz and the other with the destructive powers of a Diamond.
