Adya Milana Prisham is the world's first human conscience in a synthetic, bionic body. Nate Anastasio is an agent for the Goddard Institute of Cybernetics who's finally put his ugly past behind him. Leagues apart in age, experience, and everything in between, now mentor and apprentice. They come to learn that there's more that unites them than divides them, but when a nearly fatal blow knocks Nate out of his work for a while, Adya's new life in LA starts to give her doubts. Both of them are a long way from home and have spent years rediscovering what it means to be to be human. Whatever the General saw in Nate when she hand-picked him to be Adya's mentor, he begins to see in himself.

Both Adya and Nate make one thing abundantly clear: Nobody gets to tell them who they are. Not an injury, not the press, and certainly not their own self-doubts.
