Prologue: The Mountains
Thunder boomed across the mountains, as the dark night sky flashed to white, the wind would blow hard as rain poured from above. The winter months had already come, and the spring months had ended a few weeks ago. On the southern border of Tellus sat the large mountain camp that housed the southern army, they protected and watched the Southern region making sure that no threat invaded or got close.
In a large wooden building, the soldiers gathered and sat down as food and water were brought out to all of them and they began to eat, a small fireplace was set up and lanterns sat hung on the walls giving the place light and heat. Near the fireplace stood two men who were talking, they held wooden cups in their hands and looked towards the other men. "The storm is getting worse, and it hardly storms here." One of the men said whose voice was soft and a bit worried, the man was short compared to the other one, he stood at a height of about five foot eight, his eyes were brown, and his hair a dark brown. "It will be fine Borin, there's nothing unnatural about a storm." The other man replied the man's voice was deep, commanding, and loud, he was fairly tall as well and stood at about six foot, his hair was long and snow white and tied into a ponytail which hung from the back of his head, his face was unshaven and rough and his beard matched his hair it was fairly bushy but did not too bushy that it covered his mouth or reached his chest, his eyes were a dark blue, and his face was old and tired. "Don't you find it strange though Commander Kyrin? Like an omen. The spring months ended, and the winter months brought no cold air, but the hottest season brings the coldness and the rain?" Borin said as the commander scratched his beard before downing his glass of wine, the commander would slowly approach a small stage as he walked up the stairs, a soldier handing him a basket as the commander sat it down on the podium in front of him.
The room was filled with the chatter and noise of conversation, people talked and spoke, and laughed as they ate and drank. "SILENCE!!!!" The commander's voice boomed through the room as the sound of thunder and the flash of lightning could be heard and seen. "It's time to see which of you three have been chosen to watch the Dark Lands!!" The commander yelled out as the men looked towards him, the commander would slowly put his hand in the bucket as he pulled out a small paper with a name written on it. "Erik Vallante!" He yelled out, as a muscular man with a reddish-brown beard and hair stood up with a sigh as he waited at the door as the commander drew out another name. "Vilkson Malgan!!" He yelled out as another man stood up, the man was heavyset and had a clean-shaven head and a brown beard as he walked towards the door. "SEAN LIKIL!!!" He yelled out the last name as a small, pale, skinny, and weak man with long blonde hair slowly stood up, as he approached the door and an older soldier walked them all outside.
The three men followed the soldier through the camp as the rain poured down onto them, they would slowly enter the wooden elevator as the soldier looked at them. "It's this scrawny fuckers' first time, so don't give him a hard time." The soldier said to the other two men as Sean looked at them both before the elevator would go up. "There's wood and such for a fire so you bastards don't freeze your assess off." The soldier said as the other three men nodded before the elevator went up before stopping at a platform as the men walked across and into another elevator which took them up and towards a case of stairs, which would then finally lead them to the end of the camp where they would keep watch.
The platform they were on was almost like a balcony, it was built on the side of the final two mountains, an elevator shaft, and a set of stairs lead into the dark lands, a large locked gated blocked the stairs from being used. Two small outposts were set on the platform, each housed weapons and anything needed for a fire. The three men would soon walk onto the platform, their eyes looked forward and past the mountains into the dark deserted lands. "Well, guess we take turns keeping watch," Erik said, as he scratched his reddish beard before looking at Vilkson. "You first you fat fuck." The man said as Vilkson stepped forward and stared down at Erik. "You watch your tone before I beat you to death." He said as Erik chuckled before looking at Sean.
"Come on you fucker, let's get inside and start a fire," Erik said as Sean followed the man into the building on the right as they sat inside and Jon slowly started the fire. "You new?" Erik asked as he slowly poured a glass of rum before quickly gulping it down as he scratched his beard. "Yes, I joined a week ago. I wanted to be a soldier and be honored." Sean said with a small smile, which Erik responded to with a laugh. "You wanted to be honored? Well, you picked the wrong job then. Do you actually think anyone gives a fuck about us?" Erik asked as Sean sighed and looked towards the fire. "So, why do they need us to keep watch? What are they afraid of?" Sean asked as Erik eyed the boy and chuckled as he poured another glass.
"You really don't know do you?" Erik asked as Sean looked at him. "No, what is it that they are worried about?" Sean questioned, he was puzzled and confused by what they feared. "I'll tell you what they're afraid of," Erik said as he leaned forward, the flame of the fire would move as the wind blew and Erik leaned forward. "They're afraid of what lies beyond the mountains, the Goblins, the Orcs, the Giants, the scorpions, the spiders, the reptiles, and the worst things you could imagine," Erik said as he looked the much smaller boy in the eyes. "They're afraid of the dead that they believe come back to life, they think they will devour us and kill us all. They fear the monsters and creatures which hide beyond the Mountains and plan to kill us all." Erik said as a small chill went down Sean's neck as Vilkson slowly approached the door.
"Quit telling him stories. There is nothing out there besides the remains of an old kingdom that has long since died." The man said as Erik chuckled and looked at the large man. "Yeah, that's what they all say until the Goblins rip out their throats, and the Orcs eat their damned corpses," Erik replied as Vilkson stepped outside. "It's your turn to keep watch," Vilkson said quietly as the fire slowly went out and Erik sighed. "Well, looks like you two will have to start the fire again. I'm gonna go take a piss and keep watch." The red-headed man replied as he slowly stood up and looked out the door as he saw the figure of something or someone near the opposite Outpost. "The hell," Erik said as Vilkson grabbed an axe that was near the door and looked at Erik. "You two get a weapon, I'll try and deal with it first." He said as he held the large axe in his hands and slowly walked forward, as Sean grabbed a sword and Erik grabbed a spear as they followed closely behind Vilkson, the three would look on in confusion as they saw what the figure was.
"You shouldn't be here." Sean quietly said as he saw the figure of a small boy and slowly stepped forward, his eyes looked at the boy as a foul stench filled his nose. "What the fuck," Erik said quietly as the boy slowly turned around to show that it wasn't a normal boy, his eyes showed no sign of life and were a deep black and sunken in some, the skin around his eyes were dark, and the flesh on his face was slowly coming off, it's skin was grey and sunken in, and on some parts of it's body its bones were capable of being seen. "What the hell," Vilkson said as the boy let out a growl and charged forward as Vilkson swung his axe as the boy moved to the side and lunged at Erik as its teeth bit into his shoulder. "GET OFF ME YOU FUCKER!!" Erik yelled out in pain as he slowly tossed the boy off of him and slammed the spear through the boy's stomach before stumbling back as he held his wound, Vilkson would slowly turn to look back at him as Sean soon threw up. "What is that thing?!" Sean soon asked as Erik looked over at him with a grunt. "I don't know, but we need to get inside before any more of these show-up." He said as he looked at his blood covered shoulder and hand as Vilkson helped him towards the outpost as Sean slowly looked back towards the young boy with widened eyes.
The boy laid pinned to the ground by the spear, its hands slowly moved as it grabbed the wooden handle with both hands. "Guys!!" Sean yelled out as Erik and Vilkson turned to see the boy pulling his body up and through the spear, some of its guts and organs fell out as Sean stepped back in fear as the boy made its way off of the spear. "What is this thing!?!?" Erik yelled out as Vilkson walked past Sean and swung the axe at the boy, it would barely miss as the monster jumped on Vilkson before biting his back, his teeth digging into his flesh as Sean watched and slowly stepped back in fear as Erik watched. "You fucking coward!!"
Erik ran forward and quickly hit the creature multiple times as it eventually fell onto the ground. "Grab your spear!" Vilkson yelled out as Erik went to grab the spear before the creature would quickly leap forward and bite into Erik's neck before ripping out his throat and jumping off, Erik would slowly cover his wound as he stumbled backward and against the wooden railing as he soon fell back and his body fell off of the mountain. "DAMN YOU!!!" Vilkson yelled out in anger as he grabbed his axe, and made his way towards a bell as he soon pulled a string and caused a large system of bells to go off, one after the other. The creature would soon turn it's attention to Sean as it lunged forward and knocked the small man to the ground, its hands would grab onto Jon's head as its fingers would press against Jon's eyes. "HELP!!!!" Sean yelled out in pain, the creature's fingers would slowly press into his eyes, it's nails slowly would dig into his eyeballs as Vilkson would soon charge forward and tackle the creature off of Sean before both him and the creature would hit the railing as it broke and Vilkson and the creature fell off the mountain as well, as Sean lay on the ground, blood pouring from his eyes and onto his pale face.
The sound of multiple bells going to off filled the bottom of the camp, the commander and multiple men exiting the Housing Chambers. "GRAB A WEAPON!!" The commander yelled out, several men grabbing swords or spears, as others grabbed bows and arrows as they marched behind the commander. "Sir, what do you think the problem is?" Borin asked as he marched alongside the commander, his hand on his sword. "Whatever it is, it's not good. All I can hope is that it was an accident." He replied as he entered an elevator with Borin and the soldiers soon split off I groups as they crowded themselves in the different elevators. "Kyrin, do you think that the legends are true?" Borin slowly asked as the commander closed his eyes. "I don't believe in myths, but it's a possibility." He said as the elevator stopped and they made their way towards the outpost.
Kyrin held his lantern in his hand as he made his way up the stairs, his eyes seeing the blood and the broken wood as his eyes finally landed on Sean. "Oh God's." He muttered quietly as he ran forward and multiple men followed him. "Sean! Are you okay?" He asked as he knelt down next to the boy, he would set the lantern down as he looked at the boy's face seeing the blood coming from his eyes and his destroyed eyeballs. "C-Commander K-Kyrin? Is that you?!?" He asked as the commander quickly looked towards his men. "Y-Yes, it's me." He replied as he looked at Sean. "I-I can't s-see Sir, I can't see." The man said as Kyrin gulped and looked back towards his soldiers. "Get him to the medical bay! Now!!!" He ordered as multiple soldiers ran over and picked the man up as they began to carry him and Kyrin and Borin approached the edge of the outpost.
"There's almost no entry point, how did it manage to get up here," Kyrin said in shock and horror as he looked down and towards the land below, there were no bodies around which scared him more. "The gates still shut tight, the elevator hasn't moved. Perhaps something climbed?" Borin suggested as Kyrin turned. "We will get someone to fix the railing, ten of you will stay guard tonight!" Kyrin yelled out as he looked back at his men and they nodded, as Kyrin and Borin began to make their way towards the exit.
