Like a Unicorn I Don't Exist

Meeting the Family

Meeting the Family

Jun 15, 2018

"I'm going to warn you, mom can be a little-" Sam is cut off by the door opening. A beautiful woman with curly golden hair about shoulder length and there are Sam's eyes resting a little above a stunning smile. "Sammie!" She says happily then she turns to me. "Girl? You brought a girl home? That's amazing! I thought for a while there you might have a thing for Jack which I was willing to support but grand babies are easier to come by this way."

"MOM!" He hollers and I start to laugh uncontrollably not feeling as uncomfortable as I had just a moment ago. "Okay I like her!" I tell Sam heading inside with Sam's mom hooking her arm around mine and walking me in. I don't mind her touch, she's safe feeling.

"Sam brought a girl home!"

The house erupts and people come rushing in from all directions and my eyes widen my heart racing with the feeling of everything closing in on me.

"We needed a house big enough for all of us and ended up buying an apartment building." Sam says sighing slightly as he comes up beside me. I breathe deep breaths and finally calm myself enough to start introductions.

"My name is Catharine, and this is my husband Jaxon," Sam's mom says introducing me to a surprisingly short man. Honestly he reminds me of Leslie Jordan but with a much deeper voice.

"It's nice to see my son finally doing something right." He says smiling. "Hi, I haven't even introduced myself, how rude, my name is Augustine." I tell them putting on a smile and working on that southern charm my mother taught me. "Mind if I call you August? It's so much less formal." Jaxon says smiling.

"I actually prefer to be called August." I say nodding.

After that I am introduced to the whole family while Catharine goes off to fix Sam and I some food. I wrap my arms around my and Sam acts as a sort of bodyguard keeping everyone at a distance which I thank him for.

Sam rests his head on my shoulder and I lean over somehow comfortable with this action before getting a camera flash in return.

"I need to get going, I can't make you breakfast but mom's better than me anyway." Sam says smiling.

"I'll be here waiting for you." I tell him.

"Sure you can handle my family?" He asks. "Can they handle me?" I ask in return. "Touche." He says smiling. "I'll see you later today." He says turning me around and kissing me on the back of the hand his mom peeks around the corner continuing to use the flash.

"I'll be here." I whisper as we pull apart.

"See you tonight." He says smiling as he leaves.

"So, want to see some baby pictures?" Sam's grandma Ilene asks. "Heaven, Hell and Middle Earth yes!" I tell her smiling as I comfortably plop down next to her as she pulls out a shoe box.

After a while I notice a few things strange about the pictures, there aren't any before age 2.

"Was Sam adopted?" I ask.

"Oh all my kids were!" Catharine says waving. "Could you not have kids?" I ask knowing my mom couldn't. "No, my husband and I decided we wanted a big family but there are already so many people in the world as it is, we decided against giving birth to them, but they are all our kids. No matter what." She says smiling. "We adopted seven beautiful children then we ended up with six more after my sister and her husband passed away. I have 13 kidos, each has a room of their own, except the twins they wanted to share." She says smiling. "Wow, you really got the big family you wanted." I say trying to comprehend everything.

"Got my parents and Jaxon's to move in with us on top of it all so we have 18 people living here, none of the kids are married yet but our oldest does have a boyfriend that is marriage material." She says grinning from ear to ear.

"I was adopted by my family too, I don't have as many siblings as Sam but I do have 2." I tell her making her smile. "It's so nice when you meet someone else who adopted, it just warms my soul." She says happy as can be.

The day progressed with house chores which surprisingly I didn't mind helping with, I met all the siblings and cousin/siblings. Tentatively avoiding contact with the men of the family.

Amber is the oldest. Then there's Sam, Fred, Travis, Hannah, Jasmine, Brandon, Mariah, Sarah, the twins Adam and Aaron, Josh, and the youngest at age 8 Tabitha.

It's a mouthful and your winded after wards but its their names.

When Sam finally came home I was playing the piano for everyone in the living room, Sam's two grandma's and grandpa all his siblings and his parents all gathered into the apartment used for the living room.

I heard the door but you don't just turn around when your in the middle of a song!

I finish the little piece I learned in high school when I was in band and turn around just in time for a pair of super soft lips to land on my cheek. Tabitha smiles from beside me and she giggles as I tickle her. I look up noticing Sam leaning against the door jam and I notice the tired look on his face. "You had a bad day." I say waving him over. when he gets closer I pat the bench next to me and he sits heavily. "Only because I was away from you." He says smiling before covering his eyes from the blinding light of a flash.

"I've gotten used to the paparazzi." I tell him referring to the flashing coming from the couch.

"Good only a few more years until it stops." he says laughing.

My name is Augustine Anne Allen.
I know, too many As but it's my moms favorite letter so obviously she wasn't going to give up the chance to use the letter to its fullest potential. I'm a top selling novelist in my field which is the making everyone cry field as my editor says. I am as my overly dramatized bio says a writer who grips your heart rips it from your chest, sets it on a plate and makes you eat it by the handful. Gross but rather adequate.

My social life is a little lacking...okay a lot lacking but I mean you can't expect a best selling novelist who doesn't even leave her house to go grocery shopping to have a life! I mean come on! If you can't even find a decent man in the grocery store so why bother? I should also tell you I'm weary of men, I mean yes my stories are fiction and most of what I write doesn't reflect my past but I still have a problem with them and the thought of the "L" word. I feel like it's all a sham like the elusive thing called love is much like the elusive unicorn and just flat out doesn't exist.

Cynical view of the world, yes. But my heart will never be broken and scattered like poor Laura Wolf the leading lady in my latest best seller but unlike her, mine wasn't so literal.

This is me and my life as a Unicorn.

Or as a friend once said: An ugly rainbow farting narwhal with legs.
