Flashback: I'm in third grade, sharing a new short story (the finale of a ten-part epic called Evil Cat) with my third grade classmates. The teacher cuts me off. She tells me to take my seat.

When pressed, the teacher says: "This kind of story doesn't belong in the classroom."

Remember, this was the tenth part. She knew what evil cat was about.

Still, being young, I was more confused than frustrated. I only wanted to conclude a story that the other students adored, responding with excitement any time I had something new at story time. The unexpected censoring of Evil Cat 10 left my first fans in the lurch. No one would ever learn the fate of the family the eponymous evil cat terrorized.

Still, I wrote. Filled the hours with several writing classes in high school, spent most of my time at university finding a cohesive style, and now I'm trying to avoid dreaming about new characters and worlds at my day job.

I've been away for a long time.

We’ve been through a lot in 2020. Nature has shown her wrath; a pandemic has brought us to our knees; a nation has delivered brutality in the face of equality. I began writing my first novel, Destroying the Girl, at a time when the chaos of this year seemed like an impossibility.

I thought that the book’s themes could be a bleak fantasy mirror of our future, where a nation is ripped apart, race and culture are suppressed, and resistance has been decimated.

Now, perhaps it can be the start of something hopeful. How can I still be afraid at this point?

Set in a world that is dystopian for many, and a utopia for a few, it somehow has become much more lighthearted than the reality we’re stuck in.

I want to give my stories to as many people as possible. That’s why I’m introducing something I have envisioned for a long, long time. Read Your Way. What does that mean? You can read everything I release for free at https://lnrd.ink. You can read it for free here on Tapas.

If you wish to support my work, you can ‘Go Premium.’ This unlocks a special members-only portal with ad-free reading, evolving character profiles, high-definition maps integrated into the story, and much more.

This new experience is launching July 1st at the latest. You can subscribe to the newsletter or go premium already! Premium starts at $1/mo, but the real fun begins at $3. https://www.patreon.com/lnrdink

I perpetrate a certain pattern of activity when it comes to achieving personal goals, and it has become a frustrating tug-of-war. Last year was probably the closest I've ever come to enduring the stress and constant pressure of maintaining my writing career in a somewhat meaningful way, and then life got in the way. As is often the case, I used that as an excuse to go dormant.

It has happened dozens of times. However, the last two cycles were the most difficult in retrospect. I returned to one of my old pages a couple years ago to find my first fan letter ever, collecting dust in my inbox.

This latest instance, I decided to finally bridge the gap between my writing, family, and friends, allowing people who have always asked what I write to actually read and support it if they so chose.

With a wedding, new job, and so many other little road bumps this year, I had to take a break. I'm not surprised at this point.

What shocked me, however, was returning here--with three stories at varying stages of completion--and discovering a handful of donations from complete strangers who loved my writing.

The support of family and friends always empowers me, but to then have even the slightest hint of validation from beyond my immediate surroundings is something else entirely.

I want to come back. So, here I come.

Reapers Need Love, Too is coming back.
Elsewhere Unknown is coming back.
So much more is about to begin.

Thank you for your patience.

Thank you to everyone who has read and subscribed to Reapers Need Love, Too. I just saw the wonderful announcement that Peni's Fox Trap won and couldn't be happier about the announcement.

RNLT is gearing back up for a final run of episodes next week. I had a whole lot of garbage rise in my day job and haven't had a thought to even think about writing (that's just the worst).

The last episode of Reapers Need Love, Too before the end of July Writer's Camp has landed. 7 more episodes to go but I think this is the perfect one to summarize all that Reapers is. Action, fantasy, and unexpected comedy.

While some might call what I've accomplished in this short period of time as laughable, I've never been happier.

Of all the things I've done, my writing has been a private affair and being able to say I have over 20 subscribers is 20x more than I ever expected. So, thank you for coming along for the ride!

Reapers Need Love, Too returns tonight. We're past the halfway point and there's no stopping now, so get your ass back on the train and catch up by 5pm PST. Ash needs all the help he can get against Time and her god.

I try to not get excited about this sort of thing because I'm aware the algorithm makes success ephemeral AF, but WEEEE! I've only ever spotted Reapers in the back edges of Popular Fantasy but now here we are, reaping near the top of All Trending.

Thank you to everyone who continues to read, rate, and comment on the series. You're making me so unbearably happy.
