Karl Conner was black. Sonoko Yan was Japanese. Black + Asian=Blasian. But that equation caused a cultural clash for Karl and Sonoko. Sonoko’s mom Hikari didn’t want them to be together. At an early age, young Asian women were groomed to marry within their culture or to marry a white man to maintain their status quo. That was what Hikari did. It was irrelevant that Karl was a star running back at Duke High School who maintained a 4.0 GPA. Even though Karl was a nice guy, what mattered to Hikari was he was black. Sonoko’s stepfather Paul had an arrogance about him. He was taught by his parents that whites were the superior race. It was a generational thing and he believed it to his very core. Would Paul and Hikari go to any extreme to keep Karl and Sonoko apart? Like kidnapping Karl and hiding him out in an old warehouse? Was hate stronger than love? Or love stronger than hate? Which would triumph?
