In the year 3667, humans have depleted so much of Earth's resources that there's not enough food for everyone. In response, the Council of Kellos came up with the SoulMaker Trial in which once you turn 18, you must take the Trial to determine if you're worthy enough for surviving on in Kellos. Only the most beautiful and the smartest soul can pass. The unsuitable ones are caste away to live in the poorest section of Kellos: the Gray Area.
18 year old Eveline Greene passes the test as both smart and beautiful and is granted the privilege of living a carefree life. She doesn't need to wander the streets, looking for a job. She doesn't need to worry about tomorrow's food source.
But when she discovers the mysterious rebel group, known as the Forsaken, she begins to learn more about the world she lives in and of the secrets that the Kellos government is holding. The Forsaken is made up of people who failed the Trial and they have the darkest secrets about the government.
Suddenly it's not about being beautiful or smart. It's about having the ability to survive to the next day.
